Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Whether you're coming in for a routine clean or you've noticed something that needs attention, our hygiene team are here to help - no dentist referral needed.

A standard hygiene appointment is usually booked alongside or following a check-up with your dentist. It's a regular part of maintaining good oral health - a professional clean to remove the build-up that everyday brushing can't quite reach.
Direct access hygiene means you can book straight in with our hygienist or dental therapist without needing to see a dentist first. There's no referral, no waiting, no extra steps. If you know your gums need some attention, or you simply want a thorough clean, you can get booked in directly.
It's a flexible, straightforward option - and one that more patients are taking advantage of
Most people focus on their teeth when it comes to dental care. But your gums are just as important. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the UK, and the early stages - known as gingivitis - often cause no pain at all.
The signs to look out for include:
If any of these sound familiar, a hygiene appointment is a good place to start. And if it turns out something more needs looking at, we can refer you to one of our dentists from there.

Our hygiene team includes Louise Johnston, a qualified hygienist with a strong focus on preventative care and building long-term relationships with her patients, and Courtney Lacey, our dental therapist, who alongside hygiene treatment also carries out a range of restorative work.
Both are experienced, approachable, and great at helping patients who feel a little apprehensive about hygiene appointments feel completely at ease. If you're nervous, just let us know when you book - we'll make sure you're looked after.

Standard hygiene appointment - from £55
Direct access hygiene - £125
The main difference between the two is simply how you access care. A standard hygiene appointment is booked following a check-up with your dentist. Direct access means you can skip that step and book straight in with our hygienist yourself - ideal if you know what you need and want to get seen sooner.
Not sure which applies to you? Drop us a message and we'll help you figure out the right option.
Yes - as well as keeping your gums healthy, regular hygiene visits can make a visible difference to how your teeth look. Professional cleaning removes surface staining caused by things like tea, coffee, and red wine, leaving your teeth looking brighter and cleaner.
If you're thinking about going further with the appearance of your smile, a hygiene appointment is a great starting point before exploring options like teeth whitening or composite bonding.

We see hygiene patients from right across the region - from Hanley and Newcastle-under-Lyme to Shelton, Hartshill, Trent Vale, and Penkhull, as well as from wider Staffordshire and beyond.
Whether you're a new patient or you've been coming to Modwena for years, our hygiene team are here to help you keep your gums in the best shape possible.
For most patients, a hygiene appointment is very straightforward and causes little to no discomfort. If your gums are particularly sensitive or inflamed, you might feel some tenderness during the clean - but your hygienist will always work carefully and check in with you throughout. Local anaesthetic is available if needed.
A standard hygiene appointment is typically around 30 minutes. A direct access appointment is longer - usually 45 to 60 minutes - as it includes a full assessment as well as treatment.
This varies from person to person. For most patients, every six months works well. If you have a history of gum disease or more significant build-up, your hygienist may recommend coming in every three to four months. They'll advise you on what's right for your situation.
Not with direct access hygiene. You can book straight in without a dentist referral. If your hygienist finds anything during your appointment that they feel a dentist should look at, they'll let you know and we can arrange that from there.
Plaque is the soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth throughout the day. It can be removed with brushing and flossing. Tartar - sometimes called calculus - is what happens when plaque isn't fully removed and hardens over time. Once it hardens, it can only be removed by a hygienist or dentist using specialist tools.
Yes, and we'd actively encourage it. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your gums more susceptible to inflammation and gum disease - a condition sometimes called pregnancy gingivitis. Regular hygiene appointments during pregnancy are safe and can help protect both your oral health and your overall wellbeing.

Your gums will thank you for it. Whether you're booking a routine clean or coming in for the first time in a while, we're here to help.
